Toxic Chemicals & Beauty Products- Why Natural?

In the world we live in, we have to constantly be on the look out for cheap chemicals and toxins in our beauty products. On average, women spend around $350 a month on products that may be doing more damage than good. It would be great to think that we can trust the large companies that flood the market with 'natural" beauty products, but the truth is scarier than you may think. Some of our top selling products are beauty products such as make up, deodorant, body washes and skin care products. Women are becoming more aware everyday, but still many are purchasing products without a knowledge of the potential harm.

“The Dirty Dozen” cosmetic chemicals to avoid

  1. BHA and BHT- Synthetic antioxidants used as preservatives in lipsticks and moisturizers, among other cosmetics. They are also widely used as food preservatives.

  2. Coal Tar Dye- group of artificial ingredients consisting of colours or dyes, present in virtually every cosmetic product. Companies can produce these dyes synthetically or they can be derived directly from coal tar

  3. DEA-related ingredients.

  4. Dibutyl phthalate- used in making flexible plastics that are found in a variety of consumer products. It appears to have relatively low acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) toxicity.

  5. Formaldehyde-colorless, strong-smelling gas used in making building materials and many household products.

  6. Parabens- believed to disrupt hormone function by mimicking oestrogen. Too much oestrogen can trigger an increase in breast cell division and growth of tumours, which is why paraben use has been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues

  7. Parfum (a.k.a. fragrance)- chemicals used to make fragrances are classified as allergens, hormone disruptors, asthma triggers, neurotoxins & carcinogens. ... Fragrance chemicals, like other toxic chemicals, can pass from the skin and into the blood.

  8. PEG compounds- themselves show some evidence of genotoxicity vi,vii and if used on broken skin can cause irritation and systemic toxicity.

Why use natural beauty products?

Natural and Organic beauty products are grown without herbicides, pesticides and toxic chemicals like listed above. Organic and natural ingredients are also free from all the contamination, which means the same for your skin and body. With your skin being the largest organ within the body, it become that much more important to be mindful about what chemicals it is absorbing. Ever more so, up to 95% of an organic and natural skin care product's contents are active ingredients, meaning they hold life and your body is able to utilize and process the contents. Unlike toxins and chemicals that your body isn't sure how to process.

Maintaining youth

The fewer chemicals our skin is forced into processing, the more vitality it is able to hold. Just like anything else in the body, we are all in a slow process of aging. The better you tend to all areas of your body, the longer it may last.
